Sunset in Paradise (video)
Here's the latest in our "virtual visit to Hawaii" videos. This time we're back at Sunset Beach to film - what else - a sunset. Last time we were there in the summer. The sun sets straight out from the beach during the summer. During the winter (we shot this in January) the sun goes down to the left of the beach (if you're facing the ocean). I prefer the winter sunsets but because the surf is often pretty big between November and February, many of the beaches along the North Shore can get very crowded. The traffic for miles ...
Hawaiian Shirt Manufacturing
Hawaii's clothing manufacturers have been making Aloha shirts (aka Hawaiian shirts) in Hawaii since the 1930s. And although modern computer technology has greatly changed the way different designs are created, the actual manufacturing process today is not that different from how it was back then. It is still a labor intensive process that requires great skill at certain stages of production. We visited a local shirt maker in Honolulu to shoot some video of the various phases of the shirt manufacturing process. That electric knife in the video is scary sharp. A few years ago, a worker at another manufacturer accidentally ...
A Brief History of the Hawaiian Shirt

But to understand where the Hawaiian shirt came from, it is important to look further back in Hawaii's history. Native Hawaiians used to create their own fabric called tapa, which was made from the inner bark of wauke trees. They used special dyes ...

Sharks Cove, just past Waimea Bay on the North Shore, is a popular spot for snorkeling or checking out small fish, crabs and other sea life in the large tide pool area. It is usually quite calm in the summer months although it has its calm days throughout the year. I am not what you would call an avid snorkeler, but outside of Hanauma Bay, Sharks Cove... [Read more]
Sandy Beach Park (aka Sandy’s) on the southern part of Oahu is well-known body surfing spot. If you go to Sandy’s early enough in the morning, you will likely find yourself alone (or almost alone) on this beautiful stretch of sand. Even the drive to Sandy’s is a pleasure as you zig-zag along the scenic Makapuu coast coming from town. Read More →
